RawMoves was founded in 2004 by Nicholas Cendese and Natosha Washington. Over the past eight years, RawMoves has grown from a group of friends that believed in Nick and Tosha’s choreography to a company with a reputation for exciting, challenging, and innovative dance productions. While we remain a closely knit group of friends, RawMoves has become a powerful player in the local Salt Lake dance community with a vision and mission dedicated to presenting art and artistic productions that speak to the experiences of our generation.
From our inception, RawMoves has aimed to present the ‘RAW’ elements of our lives today, in such a way, that you are moved to a response. This response may be excitement, anger, sadness, or laughter, but, never ambivalence or complacency. The power of RawMoves lies in our commitment to diversity and individuality. We are very proud to say that we have one of the most diverse dance companies in Utah with ages ranging from 21 – 51 and every color of the rainbow. As such, we create art that is not an escape, but is honest and grounded in a world we can relate to. We use our personal experiences to explore the nature of our lives today in the hopes that we might challenge and change the world around us.
RawMoves is based in Salt Lake City, UT and regularly rehearses twice a week for 2-3 hours. With our busy schedules and time constraints, it regularly takes us 8-10 months to create and produce a show. While we have created smaller pieces in the past, the most recent works presented by the company have been evening length in nature. We try to present one show a year and have hopes to expand our performing schedule in the future.
While the dancers of RawMoves come from all walks of life, every one of the dancers has extensive dance training and has recieved at least a BFA in dance. Most of the dancers have worked with us for many years and have developed a deep understanding of how to move their bodies articulately, in the unique ‘RawMoves’ way. Because of the nature of the work, the emotional underpinnings, and the physicality we demand, every dancer must develop a trusting and compassionate relationship with each other. To date, RawMoves has never held auditions. Invitations to join the company are extended by the directors only when a person has expressed interest in the company and has worked with the dancers either inside or outside the studio.
From time to time, RawMoves has offered Saturday morning classes. Held at Judge Memorial Catholic High School, these classes are taught by Nick and/or Natosha. They are open to advanced dancers who are interested in being considered for the company as well as anyone looking for a fun and challenging movement experience. If you are interested in RawMoves class, please use the contact form on this website to let us know.
